Privacy Policy

Effective 10 October 2026. This policy covers the Sawgrid iPhone app and the website at sawgrid.vercel.app.

The short version. Sawgrid calculates on your device. There is no account, no login and no Sawgrid server. Your projects, parts, stock and offcut inventory never leave the iPhone unless you deliberately export or share a file yourself.

Two things involve another company. Purchases are handled entirely by Apple. And the free version shows advertising delivered by Google, which is started only after you have consented to it and which Sawgrid Pro removes completely. Section 4 sets out exactly what that means.

1.Who is responsible

The controller for the processing described here, in the sense of Art. 4(7) of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), is:

Sawgrid is a one person operation and does not meet the thresholds of Art. 37 GDPR or § 38 BDSG, so there is no designated data protection officer. Write to the address above with any privacy question and it reaches the responsible person directly.

2.Data in the app

Everything you type into Sawgrid stays on your iPhone. That includes:

project names, part names, dimensions, quantities and grain settings,
materials, stock panels, stock lengths and your offcut inventory,
settings such as kerf width, edge trim, minimum offcut size and preferred unit display,
the cutting plans and PDF documents Sawgrid generates from all of the above.

This data is stored in the app's own container on the device. It is not transmitted to the developer and there is no Sawgrid backend that could receive it. If you have iCloud Backup switched on, iOS may include the app container in your encrypted device backup, which is a function of iOS and not of Sawgrid. Deleting the app deletes the data on the device.

When you export a cutting plan as a PDF or share a project file, iOS hands the file to whatever destination you pick in the share sheet. What happens to it after that is governed by the privacy policy of that destination, not by this one.

Sawgrid asks for no location access, no contacts access, no camera access and no microphone access. It carries no third-party analytics or crash reporting SDK. Recommendations for our other apps use aggregate view and open counts as described below. The one third party component inside the app is Google's advertising kit in the free version, described in full in section 4. None of the project data listed above is passed to it.

3.Purchases and subscriptions

All payments run through Apple's In-App Purchase system. Apple is the seller of record. The developer never sees your name, your address, your card number or any other payment detail. What the app receives back from Apple is an entitlement record that tells it whether a purchase is active, and that check happens on the device against Apple's receipt.

Legal basis

Processing the purchase entitlement inside the app is necessary to perform the contract you entered into when you bought the app or a subscription, Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR.

4.Advertising in the free version

The free version of Sawgrid shows advertising. It appears as a banner under the project list, under the project editor and under the finished cutting plan, and as one full screen advert after an optimisation has finished, in the moment between the run ending and the plan opening. It never interrupts an entry and never a running optimisation. Sawgrid Pro removes the advertising entirely.

The full screen advert is capped in the app itself: the first three optimisations after installing carry none at all, at least three further optimisations and at least three minutes have to pass before the next one, and never more than one is shown in a single session.

The adverts are delivered by the Google Mobile Ads SDK. The provider is Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland, for users in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, and Google LLC elsewhere. To fill an advert slot, Google receives technical data from the device such as an IP address, device and operating system characteristics and, if you allow it, an advertising identifier.

Your consent comes first. Before the advertising kit is started at all, the app shows Google's User Messaging Platform consent form, and iOS then asks its own App Tracking Transparency question. Only after that does any advert load. The legal basis is your consent, Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR, and you may withdraw it at any time with effect for the future: open Settings in the app and choose Advertising privacy choices in the Legal section. Buying Sawgrid Pro removes the advertising altogether.

Google's own processing is described at policies.google.com/privacy and, for advertising specifically, at business.safety.google/privacy.

Recommendations for our other apps

In Settings, the app can fetch up to three recommendations for our other apps. The choices depend on the app you are using, App Store availability and iOS compatibility, not on your personal data or activity inside the app. App icons load from Apple’s image servers. Opening a recommendation takes you to the App Store with a campaign label identifying the source app and placement, never a person.

We count qualified views and successful opens in aggregate. Our service stores daily counts with the source app, recommended app, placement, configuration revision and optional presentation variant. It does not store an account, advertising identifier, device identifier, persistent visitor identifier or personal profile, and it does not receive the app’s private content. These counts cannot tell us who installed an app.

The recommendation service is hosted by Supabase. Network requests necessarily expose an IP address to the hosting provider for delivery and security; our aggregate counter does not store it. 5.Data Apple collects

Downloading the app, updating it and buying anything inside it are transactions between you and Apple. Apple processes that data as an independent controller under its own privacy policy.

If you have switched on the sharing of analytics with developers in iOS Settings, Apple may make aggregated and statistical crash reports and usage measurements available in App Store Connect. This data reaches the developer in aggregate form and is not linked to your name or to your Apple Account. You can turn it off in Settings, Privacy and Security, Analytics and Improvements.

6.The website

The site at sawgrid.vercel.app is a set of static pages. It sets no cookies, embeds no tracking pixels, loads no third party fonts and carries no advertising script. This privacy policy, the terms of use, the support page and the imprint carry no measurement at all.

The home page and the product pages do use Vercel Web Analytics, a measurement service of the hosting provider named below. It runs from this same domain, is cookieless, sets no identifier, stores nothing on your device and builds no profile. It counts page views and it counts a click on the App Store button, together with the place of that button on the page and the path of the page. The purpose is to see which pages actually help someone find the app; the legal basis is our legitimate interest in understanding that, Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR. No visitor is identified, nothing is evaluated in relation to a person, and none of it is passed on to third parties or combined with any other data.

Hosting and the measurement described above are provided by Vercel Inc., 440 N Barranca Avenue #4133, Covina, CA 91723, USA, which acts as a processor for us and whose own privacy notice is at vercel.com/legal/privacy-policy. Like any web server, the hosting infrastructure records technical log data when a page is requested: IP address, date and time, the requested path, the HTTP status, the referring URL if your browser sends one, and the user agent string. This is necessary to deliver the pages and to keep the service secure and available, which is our legitimate interest under Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR. These logs are short lived and are not combined with any other data or used to profile visitors.

7.If you write to support

When you send an email, we process your address, the content of your message and any attachment you choose to send, for the purpose of answering you. The basis is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR where your message concerns a contract, and otherwise our legitimate interest in dealing with enquiries, Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR.

The support mailbox is a GMX address operated by 1&1 Mail & Media GmbH in Germany. Please do not send personal data you do not want us to have. If you send a project file so a cutting plan problem can be reproduced, that file contains your parts and dimensions and nothing else, and it is deleted once the case is closed.

8.Transfers outside the EEA

Your project data is not transferred to a third country by us, because the app does not transmit it at all. Transfers can arise from the recommendation service described above and from three other places: the advertising in the free version, section 4, the hosting and the measurement of this website, section 6, and Apple's handling of distribution and payment, section 3. Each of those involves companies in the United States.

Google and Vercel may process this data on servers in the United States. Such transfers rest on the adequacy decision of the European Commission of 10 July 2023 for the EU-US Data Privacy Framework where the recipient is certified under that framework, and otherwise on the standard contractual clauses adopted by the European Commission under Art. 46(2)(c) GDPR. Apple's transfers are governed by Apple's own privacy policy.

9.How long data is kept

Project data: on your device, for as long as you keep it. You control it, and deleting the app removes it.
Support email: kept while the enquiry is open and for as long afterwards as any statutory retention duty requires, then deleted.
Server logs of the website: kept only briefly for security and operational purposes.

10.Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right to:

request confirmation of whether your data is processed and obtain a copy of it, Art. 15,
have inaccurate data corrected, Art. 16,
have data erased, Art. 17,
have processing restricted, Art. 18,
receive your data in a structured, commonly used, machine readable format and have it transmitted to another controller, Art. 20,
object at any time, on grounds relating to your particular situation, to processing based on legitimate interest, Art. 21. Where the objection concerns direct marketing, it is unconditional,
withdraw a consent you have given, at any time and with effect for the future, Art. 7(3),
lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority, Art. 77.

Send any of these requests to levin.schwab@gmx.de. Bear in mind that because there is no account or persistent user identifier in the recommendation counts, and no project data is uploaded, we normally hold no identifiable app data about you, so an access request will in most cases truthfully be answered with the statement that nothing is stored.

11.Children

Sawgrid is a professional and hobbyist workshop tool. It is not directed at children, and it is not knowingly used to collect data from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has provided data through the app, write to the address above and it will be dealt with immediately.

12.Changes to this policy

This policy will be updated if the app changes in a way that affects it, for example if a feature is added that processes new data. The effective date at the top always tells you which version you are reading. Material changes that require your consent will be presented to you in the app rather than quietly published here.
